Manhattan, NY - July 11 -- Byron C. Preiss, an author and a publisher who specialized in graphic novels and science fiction, died in a traffic accident on July 9 in East Hampton, N.Y., the New York Times has reported. He was 52 and lived in Manhattan. Preiss was the president of Byron Preiss Visual Publications and Ibooks, and was recognized as a pioneer in digital publishing.

All of us at PublishersNewswire remember Preiss from our years of going to the San Diego Comic Con in the '70s, and various World SF Conventions "back in the day." Many books and graphic novels from Preiss' various packaging and publishing ventures made their way onto our book shelves. He will be missed.

The Comic Con website has a memorial page set-up, including a wonderful entry by one of Byron's contemporaries, Jim Steranko (another legend in the visual arts).

Born in Brooklyn, Preiss graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972 and earned a master's degree in communications from Stanford University. He produced The Words of Gandhi, an audio book that won a Grammy Award in 1985. He was also the co-author of Dragonworld, a novel published by Bantam Books in 1979, the Times reported.
