BOCA RATON, Fla. /Publishers Newswire/ — Ron Wilk, author of the thriller “Papal Rogues” (ISBN: 978-1936183029), will be appearing on Lifetime Television’s, The Balancing Act, on Monday, August 30, 2010. The national morning show, which airs from 7 – 8 a.m., will feature Wilk’s inspiring transition from neurologist to novelist and offer his compelling tips on how to create a successful and fulfilling “second act” of your life.

“Figuring out how to rebound from life-altering circumstances is a dilemma that many people face at some juncture,” explains Wilk. “Whether it’s loss of a job, loss of health, loss of a loved one, or a myriad of other challenges, at some point life as we knew it will come to an abrupt halt and we will be left wondering how to go on.”

For Wilk, his need to figure out a “second act” for himself came about after a disabling fall down a flight of stairs. In too much pain to continue with his thriving neurology practice, he initially dealt with an amalgam of negative emotions.

“From depression to lack of self-worth, I ran the gamut of feelings,” he states. “But as a physician I knew the importance of seeking out something new to challenge me and stir some positive feelings.”

As the result of a serendipitous journey, Wilk discovered his love of writing, especially in the thriller/mystery genre. His first two books, “Red Death” and “Kerberos,” were released on the Internet and have had over 950,000 downloads to date. These free downloads can be accessed at www.ronwilkfiction.com .

This success led to “Papal Rogues” which was released a few months back by Langdon Street Press. “Papal Rogues” explores the secret world of computer hacking and opens with the murder of a young hacker who discovers something that was meant to remain hidden. As the dramatic “what if” scenario unfolds, Wilk takes readers on an adrenaline pumping ride that draws them into the clandestine underbelly of international corporations, the U.S. military and most surprisingly, the Vatican. “Papal Rogues” is available at Amazon.com in soft cover and e-book for Kindle as well as all major booksellers.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /Publishers Newswire/ — Konrad Ventana this week announced, through his agent, the release of two new e-books now available through Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. These new releases represent the first books of a series known to the literary cognoscenti as the Post-Lux Trilogy: “Book 1, A Desperado’s Daily Bread” (ISBN: 9780595622177); “Book 2, The Unbearable Sadness of Zilch” (ISBN: 9781440158254); “Book 3, Questing for Uberjoy” (est. 2011).

The reclusive author of this postmodern, post-perspicuous literature is a prominent scientist, professor, inventor, and visionary whose pioneering work in molecular biotechnology served to usher targeted genetic medicine across the threshold of history-his intellectual accomplishments are, in a word, profound. The first editions of this series of books received both Editor’s Choice and Rising Star designations from the publishers.

Konrad Ventana (literally, “Bold Counsel through a Window”) embraces the time-honored ideals of social responsibility (where poets, playwrights, and artists once served as guiding lights) for a modern society that “walks and runs for the cure” yet, in actuality, has been lulled into a state of non-participation in the life-of-the-mind and acts of meaningful creativity.

In each new book of The Post-Lux Trilogy, the author presents a vital and important aspect of the creative process, as it is boldly captured and elegantly revealed through the artistry of literary fiction.

Each remarkable book is a picture window: (1) A Desperado’s Daily Bread reveals the alienation of the true visionary in a society that honors the robes of authority, yet not the swink and pluck of the creative artist. (2) The Unbearable Sadness of Zilch chronicles the loss of divine inspiration and the role of the muse in an unforgettable and provocative Hollywood neo-Noir. (3) Questing for Uberjoy sweeps the reader off into a world of high drama and adventure in the remote Himalayan mountains of Nepal and Tibet, where lofty ideals clash with the myth of the conquering hero until nothing, not even the evening stars, will ever appear to be quite the same. This final volume is scheduled for 2011.

A Desperado’s Daily Bread & The Unbearable Sadness of Zilch are available from: www.iUniverse.com, www.bn.com, and www.amazon.com .

SANTA ANA, Calif. /Publishers Newswire/ — A new book by author and thermodynamicist Richard Moser, “A Better Story” (ISBN-13: 978-0974686547; MEC Publishing), uses the basic laws of physics with our observations of the universe of galaxies, stars and our solar system with the evidence we have gathered about the Earth in the geologic, fossil, biological and cultural records to construct a new story about where we live, who we are, how it happened and where we go from here.

According to Moser: The latest advancements in astronomy, the availability of 3D maps of the galaxies, reveal a new structure for our universe. These maps show patterns in the distribution of the galaxies indicating a universe that is not expanding at all. These patterns in galaxy groups begin within our nearby galaxies and continue outward as far as we can see.

The discovery was made by a small team of independent scientists, led by researcher Richard Moser, a prominent thermodynamicist and includes brother David Moser, a mathematician and amateur astronomer who have both have decades of experience in this field.

Just as centuries ago the invention of the telescope revealed new information to Copernicus and Galileo that changed the conception of our solar system, the invention of the computer and recently developed compilation of large databases containing the actual three dimensional locations of thousands of galaxies reaching out hundreds of millions of light-years have shown a new structure for the universe. These databases can be seen by anyone with a computer and are available in several commercially available 3D astronomy programs.

This new information reveals that the universe is fixed in size and has a definite shape. “We live in a very large mirrored room, a cave, with almost perfectly reflecting curved walls,” says Moser.

“This universe is a closed, reflective room or cave. We are about 1.5 million light-years to the closest wall where we can see the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) as the reflection of our own Milky Way Galaxy as it looked several million years ago. The far wall is about six to eight million light-years away in the direction of the Virgo Cluster.”

After the nearby reflective wall in the direction of Andromeda, a second wall has been determined in the direction of M83 but there remains much analytical work to do before more walls are discovered. That research will not involve telescopes but will use techniques of computer analysis similar to the ray-tracing programs currently used to simulate accurate light reflections in our best computer-generated movies.

Galaxy clusters are described by astronomers as the largest known structures in the universe and they can now be seen to actually be the entire universe. Repeated images of these galaxy clusters are seen reflected over and over and appear as long foamy walls of galaxy bubbles extending outward.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /Publishers Newswire/ — Athletes who heard the rumor said it couldn’t be done. How could a 5-foot woman, barely weighing in at 95 pounds compete with professional weightlifting men to set a new world record? On August 14, 2010, at St. Emydius Gym in San Francisco, Dr. Thienna Ho showed them how as she set the new Guinness World Record for the heaviest sumo deadlift in one hour. The world record was 90,058 pounds in one hour; Thienna achieved 104,846 pounds and three ounces in one hour.

The barbell weighed in at 45 pounds, 13 ounces (nearly half her body weight). In order for each lift to be counted, she had to achieve wide stance sumo leg spread where her feet were pointing at a nearly 90-degree angle; touch the barbell to the floor; and completely straighten her legs. Sumo dead lifts solely use the hip and leg strength to push the barbell off the floor which requires tremendous flexibility.

Some weightlifters said that since Thienna was lifting light weight; it was easy. Thienna disagrees. “If a 200 pound man did this, he would have to lift nearly 100 pounds more than 1,000 times in an hour. The man who broke this world record in 2007, Eamonn Keane, did 731 repetitions of 95 pounds.”

While Thienna is no stranger to setting world records (she has four under her belt), she does admit that this was the toughest. Other records include: most sumo squats in one hour (5,135); the longest Samson’s chair (static wall sit) – 11 hours, 51 minutes and 14 seconds; and the heaviest deadlift in one minute (3,864 pounds).

“I am not a weightlifter. In fact, I have never lifted a weight in my life,” Thienna says. “Prior to setting this record, I trained for four months, two to three times per week to test my endurance and ate a sulfur-rich diet.”

Thienna is such a believer in the benefits that foods rich in sulfur can deliver that she recently released a new cookbook, “Cooking on the Light Side” (ISBN: 978-0-9792103-7-2) which offers 160 recipes for meat lovers and vegetarians, alike. Even people with a sweet tooth will find dairy-free recipes that are sure to make them smile.

“Cooking on the Light Side,” stresses amazing skin, vitality and robust health. The sulfur-rich recipes help with age spots, acne, hyper-pigmentation and more. She showcases and demonstrates how to incorporate at least 50 varieties of sulfur-rich vegetables into the diet, and provides tips and tricks for prepping and cooking sulfur-rich foods to extract maximum nutritional benefits.

Thienna credits her endurance to her sulfur-rich diet. She says that these foods improve strength, stamina, skin tone and overall health. She eats sulfur-rich vegetables such as cabbage, onions and garlic because she has discovered that sulfur cleanses the body and pumps more oxygen into muscles. These record breaking feats are, no doubt, a testament to this.

Super-athlete and nutritional scientist, Thienna developed her understanding of sulfur-rich foods and how they interact with the body over years of research and testing. She is eager to show people that they do not need drugs or steroids to be strong and to harness tremendous endurance; they just need to eat the right foods.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio /Publishers Newswire/ — “The characters seem like real people and not fictional creations,” “You won’t want to put it down until you finish it – and then you will want more,” and “Wow, who is this author?” were first reactions to the debut novel “MAKE THE COUGAR PURR” (ISBN: 978-1452824543) on online bookstore sites such as amazon.com, bn.com and powells.com. Author Sonja Paris put her work into a fictional “skeleton”, yet its “vital organs” are in part based on autobiographic reflections of her own very turbulent life.

“Even though it’s not really my life depicted in ‘MAKE THE COUGAR PURR,’ it is pretty darn close to what I had to cope with since I became widowed in 2006. I put the story into fiction to be able to write frankly without putting a muzzle on. Whitewashing the content and the language would have felt like being untrue to myself and done my book characters no justice,” she continues.

Paris’ writing style combines all the five senses with raw sex and deep-felt emotions, described so vividly, as if watching a screenplay.

“MAKE THE COUGAR PURR” depicts the life of Hannah, a German woman in her forties in a small town in Ohio. Constantly betrayed by her husband, she drowns her sorrow in booze and spends his money freely, until he reveals to her that his last affair with a much younger woman is based on true love and not on pure lust. Driven by rage and desperate to find a new identity for herself, Hannah turns into a prancing cougar on the hunt and stumbles from one sexual escapade into another on her search for true love.

“Being married to a rock star like my late husband Johnny Paris (saxophonist and front man of the band Johnny and the Hurricanes) has shaped me in some form, and also, who the main characters in my book are. Nevertheless, even people in my immediate circle, who should really know me, were shocked by my book and its boldness. But then again – I love to shock,” Paris admits.

Sonja Paris’ next book, a biography of her late husband Johnny Paris, written in collaboration with her co-author Duane Thomas, a former guitarist of the famous instrumental rock and roll band Johnny and the Hurricanes, will hit the market at the end of this year published by Bank House Books out of the UK.

Released by CreateSpace, “MAKE THE COUGAR PURR,” is a 494-page trade paperback (ISBN-10: 1452824541, ISBN-13: 978-1452824543). It is available through Amazon.com, CreateSpace.com and other online bookstores.

NEW YORK, N.Y. /Publishers Newswire/ — The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE), the bookseller’s voice in the fight against censorship, today announced the election of two publishing industry veterans to the ABFFE board. Roberta Rubin, the owner of The Book Stall at Chestnut Court in Winetka, Illinois, and Patricia Johnson, executive vice president and editorial director of Alfred A. Knopf, Pantheon and Schocken Books, were elected to three-year terms.

Rubin is an award-winning bookseller. In 1986, she purchased the Chestnut Court Book Shop in Winnetka, a Chicago suburb, and renamed it The Book Stall at Chestnut Court. The Book Stall won the Haslam Award for Excellence in Independent Bookselling in 1993; was chosen as one of the Top 10 Outstanding Bookstores by USA Today in 1997; and hailed by the Chicago Tribune as one of the top ten bookstores in the Chicago area in 2007. Rubin has been active in the American Booksellers Association and held various positions in her community, including serving twice as president of the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce.

Johnson started her career as a bookseller. She managed a Waldenbooks store before becoming a trade paperback buyer for the chain and later moving to Encore Books as head of merchandising. After gaining ten years of retail experience, she became manager of national accounts at Bantam Books and, two years later, director of Doubleday. In 1992, Johnson was named vice president and publisher at Random House Audio and given the additional title of publisher, Random House Large Print, the following year. She became vice president and associate publisher at Knopf in 1996.

The ABFFE board expressed its appreciation to its outgoing board members, Bonnie Ammer, formerly of Random House, who served on the board for six years, and Betsy Burton of The King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City, who was a board member for several years and is now serving on the ABA board.

SAN FRANCISO, Calif. /Publishers Newswire/ — On August 14, 2010 Thienna Ho plans to take the men’s Guinness World Record for the most weight dead lifted in one hour. Athletes who heard of this news said “it is just impossible for a 5 feet tall female, weighing nearly 97 pounds, to break this world record!” This event will be streaming live FREE over the Internet for those curious to see if Thienna can dead lift and shatter the world record. She already holds more than one record for other athletic activities.

Thirty years ago, Thienna Ho and her family were Vietnamese boat people who survived a brutal attack by Thai pirates during a treacherous voyage on their way to their new home in San Francisco. Now Thienna is a super-athlete who has broken Guinness World Records (GWR) for feats of strength and endurance.

Thienna said when she applied to challenge this world record with GWR, the world record was just 69,445 pounds in one hour held by Eamonn Keane (Ireland) in 2007. Since she posted her personal record of 90,000 pounds in an hour on YouTube, two men had tried and one man has beaten her personal record, taking over the new world title. The current world record is 90,058 lb by Stuart Barr of the UK as of April 2010.

Thienna is not only a super-athlete but also a nutritional scientist. Thienna credits her endurance and strength to her sulfur rich diet which she developed during years of research and testing on how foods affect skin health, complexion, and fitness. She is eager to show the world that you do not need drugs or steroids to be strong and harness tremendous endurance. You just need to eat the right foods.

Thienna’s cookbook has been widely anticipated. Everything you want to know about how she eats, prepares food, and all other secrets are packed in her ground-breaking book, “Cooking on the Light Side: Smart Recipes for Bright Skin and Vitality” (ISBN: 978-0-9792103-7-2).

You can participate in Thienna’s attempt to make history at the official Guinness World Records event. Admission is free and open to the public. A Guinness World Records adjudicator, Amanda Mochan, will be on hand to witness Thienna. Thienna’s new cookbook will be given out free to attendees and a book signing will be held right after the event.

Date: Saturday, August 14th, 2010. Location: St. Emydius Gym San Francisco, 255 Jules Street, San Francisco, CA 94112. Event Time: 12:30 p.m. Pacific Time (PDT/PST) USA.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /Publishers Newswire/ — For the second quarter of 2010, Publishers Newswire (PNW), an online resource established in 2004 for small publishers, as well as lesser known and first-time book authors, has today announced its latest semi-annual “Books to Bookmark” list. This is a round-up of 9 new and recent books which may have been missed due to not originating from major New York book publishing houses, or “big name” authors.

“Now that the book industry is starting to recover from the slow economy of the past 18 months, there has been a renewed blush of new books coming out,” said PNW editor Christopher Laird Simmons. “What is most clear this year is that book publishing is not going away, thankfully, as evidenced by very strong sales of class leading e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle, the Apple iPad, and Barnes and Noble’s Nook. Print is still lively, but more and more people are ‘trying out’ the electronic publishing options — great news for all publishers.” Simmons has been a working journalist for over 25 years, and has written widely on the topic of publishing, marketing, and e-books.

The following list of 9 books are provided as “worth a look” for media and booksellers, as well as avid readers of new and unique literary content.
* ‘The Dream’ by Joe Puckett Recounts Nostalgic Tale of Small Town Basketball Dreams

High school basketball took hold of one small town – Peerless, Montana – and author, Joe Puckett, recounts the story in “The Dream: The Story of the 1978 and 1979 Peerless Panthers” (ISBN: 978-0984549405; Aubade Publishing). The book details 1957-1980 when the State Class C Montana basketball tournament was played in Helena. It also outlines the passing of the District 1-C basketball conference – once the most powerful Class C basketball conference in Montana – which today no longer exists. Laced with humor, small-town intrigue and anecdotes, most readers will find something to identify with in “The Dream.” It reveals just how closely one small town’s identity and social life are connected to high school basketball. Includes 55 black and white photos that vividly bring the story to life.

* ‘Make the Cougar Purr’ by Sonja Paris is an Erotic Journey of Rediscovery

Tired of romance novels that just portray young women with bodies to die for, novelist Sonja Paris tried a new approach in her first novel “Make The Cougar Purr” (ISBN: 978-1452824543; 494 pages; paperback; CreateSpace). This book is about betrayal, loss and sexual identification, and even though Paris put her work into a fictional “skeleton” its “vital organs” are in part based on autobiographic reflection of her own very turbulent life (she’s the widow of Johnny and the Hurricanes saxophone legend Johnny Paris). “Cougar” depicts the life of Hannah, a middle-aged woman in a small Ohio town. Paris’ writing style combines all the five senses with raw sex and deep-felt emotions, described so vividly, as if watching a screenplay.

* ‘The Words of the Founders’ by Paul Rosenberg Hopes the Resounding Ring of Truth will Inspire ‘Right Action’ that is the Spirit of America

In “The Words of the Founders” (ISBN 13: 978-0979987731; paperback; Ascoli Publishing and Vera Verba Publishing) Rosenberg has assembled 570 timely and poignant quotes from America’s founding fathers, the framers of the Constitution: George Washington, Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, George Mason, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and others. The book has little “editorializing,” believing that it’s time for Americans to directly take to heart the words of our Founders — even read how the Founders’ own ideas changed over the years. There are some amazing quotes and thoughts that were left out of our “civics” classes – that show how vehement the Founders were that our only chance of survival as a nation was a weak federalism and that all efforts of a strong government should be resisted at all costs. Rosenberg is also the author of the counter-culture classic “A Lodging of Wayfaring Men.”

* ‘Surprising Silhouettes’ by Connie Tamaddon Brings Light and Shadow to Playful Children’s Book

In her new book, “Surprising Silhouettes” (ISBN: 978-0977801831; 48 pages; hardcover; Nautilus Press) photographer Connie Tamaddon uses the properties of light and shadow to create a clever read-out-loud guessing game that illustrates that not everything is as it first seems. Using unusual materials to fashion seemingly familiar shapes, Tamaddon creates an imaginative way to entertain – and enlighten – readers young and old, and provides a playful yet serious opportunity for parents and children (ages 4-8) to discuss the dangers of prejudging objects and people. Tamaddon has worked in photography and video production for more than ten years and is the founder of design, a children’s photography workshop. Her work has been displayed in galleries and schools, and has been published in various newspapers.

* ‘One Black Woman’s Opinion’ by Valerie Stallworth Stephens Contains Motivational Writings to Inspire and Entertain

What started out as therapy, ended up as a compilation of motivational writings in “One Black Woman’s Opinion” (ISBN: 978-0578041209; 113 pages; paperback), by Valerie Stallworth Stephens. Written for all age groups, as well as men and women, “One Black Woman’s Opinion,” is designed to promote the power of positive thinking. Its mission is to motivate and to nurture the spirit. Stallworth’s co-workers provided her with topics ranging from forgiveness and dealing with pain to the power of the word. Before she knew it, she had a book. One of Stallworth’s favorite pieces is titled, “It is not about waiting on the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain.” This excerpt focuses on the unpredictability of life and the ability to embrace it no matter what.

* ‘The Artist’s Guide to Success in the Music Business’ by Producer Loren Weisman Reveals Modern Principals of Making it as a Musician

“The Artist’s Guide to Success in the Music Business – The Best Moves for the Roughest Odds” (ISBN: 978-1935359333; 423 pages; paperback; Book Publishers Network) by author Loren Weisman is a detailed analysis of the subjects that all musicians should understand and apply in order to pursue a successful and sustainable career in music. Additionally, 25% of the book sales revenue goes each month to a different charity organization for their continued dedication to independent musicians and music education.

* ‘Papal Rogues’ by Author Ron Wilk Draws the Reader into the Clandestine Underbelly of Corporate America, the U.S. Military and the Vatican

In a daring and controversial “what if” scenario, Ron Wilk creates a compelling and multi-layered thriller that leaves readers wondering just how far a nefarious few will go to recapture the reins of power and just how vulnerable the world can be when the secrets of cyberspace fall into the wrong hands. “Papal Rogues” (ISBN: 978-1936183029; 520 pages; paperback; Langdon Street Press – a division of Hillcrest Publishing Group, Inc.) is Wilk’s first published novel; however, the author has previously released two highly successful Internet novels with nearly 1 million pages downloaded to date.

The art of tattoos has intrigued many people in various cultures around the world. “Tattoo Stories” (ISBN: 978-0984241705; 113 pages; hardcover) not only addresses taboos plaguing the art form, but draws readers in for an intimate look at journeys, experiences and cultures, through spoken word paired with stunning photography by Marvin Malzahn. The foreword is written by Chester Bennington, front man for Linkin’ Park and Dead By Sunrise.

* ‘Funds to the Rescue’ by Susan Daffron

Author Susan Daffron’s “Funds to the Rescue: 101 Fundraising Ideas for Humane and Animal Rescue Groups” (ISBN: 978-0974924595; 188 pages; paperback; Logical Expressions, Inc.) combines practical fundraising advice with real examples of fundraising activities that humane groups have used along with rankings of costs, planning time, and personnel required. Many books on fundraising don’t offer specific and straightforward ideas for pet-oriented fundraisers, but “Funds” is written specifically for humane groups. Daffron is the founder of the National Association of Pet Rescue Professionals, an organization that offers tools and information to help rescue groups save more companion animal lives.
